Hockey Game Layering Guide: Tank, Tee & Hoodie
Figuring out what to wear to a hockey game when it's cold trips up plenty of fans. You walk in from a crisp fall parking lot, sit next to a sheet of ice for three periods, then pack into a warm concourse between intermissions. One heavy coat can't handle all of that. Layers can.
This guide lays out a simple three-layer arena outfit: tank, tee, hoodie, with joggers underneath. You stay warm in your seat, cool off when the building heats up, and show your team's colors the whole night.
Why Hockey Games Call for Layers
Rinks are kept cold on purpose. Hard, fast ice needs a cold building, and the seats closest to the glass feel it most. The concourse, a packed section, or a late-game rally can turn that chill into sweat fast.
A bulky jacket leaves you two options: wear it and overheat, or take it off and carry it all night. Layers give you more choices. Take one off at the first intermission, put it back on for the third period, and you never have to guess.
The system is:
- Base layer: a hockey tank
- Mid layer: a team tee
- Outer layer: a hockey hoodie
- Bottoms: hockey joggers
Layer 1: The Hockey Tank (Base)
The tank goes next to your skin, so it needs to be light and breathable. Our men's hockey tanks and women's hockey tanks are 100% polyester with a sublimated graphic, which means the design is dyed into the fabric instead of printed on top. It won't crack or peel, and it doesn't add any stiff weight under your other layers.
Why start with a tank and not a tee? A sleeveless base keeps your arms free under the next two layers, so nothing bunches at the shoulders. If the arena gets warm, or the night moves to a bar afterward, you can strip down to the tank and still be wearing your team.
Women's tanks are a racerback cut and run XS–3XL. For fit details, see our Women's Hockey Apparel guide.
Layer 2: The Team Tee (Mid)
The tee adds sleeves and a little warmth without bulk. Our hockey t-shirts are 100% cotton and unisex, XS–4XL. Cotton over a polyester tank works well: the tank handles moisture and the tee adds a soft, warm layer on top.
This is also the layer you'll most likely end up wearing on its own, whether you're eating in the concourse or heading home in the car. Pick a design you like looking at, not just a logo.
Layer 3: The Hockey Hoodie (Outer)
This layer does the real work. A good hockey hoodie blocks the chill off the ice and looks like gameday. Ours are 100% polyester with all-over team graphics, hockey-lace drawstrings, and a kangaroo pouch on many styles for your phone, tickets, or cold hands. Sizes are unisex XS–4XL.
Sizing tip for layering: if you plan to wear a tee and tank underneath, think about going one size up for a relaxed fit over the other layers. If you only ever wear it over a tee, your usual size is fine. Our Hockey Hoodie Buying Guide covers fit and fabric in more detail.
Bottoms: Hockey Joggers
Jeans are cold, stiff, and uncomfortable in stadium seats. Hockey jogger pants are the warmer, comfier choice: polyester air-mesh, elastic waist with drawstring, two side pockets, and sublimated cuffs that match the rest of your gear. They run S–2XL (no XS), so size down to a small if you usually wear an extra small.
Putting It Together: Three Arena Outfits
The Season Ticket Holder: Men's tank + team tee + all-over hoodie + joggers. Everything matches, and each layer comes off in order as the building warms up.
The Date Night: Women's racerback tank + tee, with a hoodie tied at the waist or on the seatback until the third period. Relaxed, warm, easy to adjust.
The Road Trip: Tank + hoodie, no tee. A good choice when you're driving a long way and the car heater is on. Throw the tee in the bag for later.
How to Adjust Through the Night
- Walking in: All layers on. Parking lots in the fall are cold.
- Warmups and first period: Hoodie stays on, especially near the glass.
- First intermission: The concourse is crowded and warm, so drop to the tee.
- Second and third periods: Hoodie back on as the ice cools the building.
- Overtime or a late rally: You'll be on your feet. Down to the tank if you need to.
- After the game: Hoodie on for the walk out.
Keep the Layers Looking New
Hoodies and tees go through a lot during the season: spilled drinks, damp seats, cold walks back to the car. Every piece we sell is machine wash safe. To keep sublimated colors and cotton prints bright all season, see our How to Wash & Care for Hockey Apparel guide.
