Anaheim Ducks Retro Alternate Mesh Hockey Shorts Hockey Shorts BenchClearers

From the Mighty Ducks movie that launched a franchise in 1993 to the 2007 Stanley Cup championship, the Anaheim Ducks' hockey story is unlike any other in the NHL. Kariya, Selanne, Getzlaf, and Perry made Honda Center a fortress in Orange County, and Ducks fans rep that orange and black with true SoCal swagger. The only NHL franchise born from a Disney movie — and they turned it into a Cup-winning legacy.

The Ducks joined the NHL in 1993 as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, named after the Disney movie, and dropped the "Mighty" in 2006. In their first season under the new name they won the 2007 Stanley Cup, the first ever won by a California team. The Mighty Ducks-era retro looks live in this collection too.

More NHL: every NHL team. More California hockey: every California team.

More than just childhood nostalgia

Mighty Ducks story slide 1: the Disney movie that became a team - in the 90s Disney made a hockey film for kids, then bought an actual NHL franchise and named it after the movie. — photo 1 of 12

Mighty Ducks story slide 2: 1992, the movie makes $50 million - but the real number was the kids, a whole generation walking out of the theater with a stick in their hands. — photo 2 of 12

Mighty Ducks story slide 3: three months later the NHL sells Disney a team for the same $50 million - Eisner called the movie his market research. — photo 3 of 12

Mighty Ducks story slide 4: eggplant, jade and a goalie mask with a duck's face - nothing in the league had ever looked like this, and that mask was about to become an icon. — photo 4 of 12

Mighty Ducks story slide 5: opening night October 8 1993 - Disney showed up with a guitar-playing human mascot called The Iceman; the crowd hated him and he never came back. — photo 5 of 12

Mighty Ducks story slide 6: Paul Kariya, the kid they drafted first - fourth overall in 1993, five-foot-ten in a league full of giants, 989 points in 989 games. — photo 6 of 12

Mighty Ducks story slide 7: then Teemu came, February 1996 - Kariya, Selanne and Rucchin on one line, and in 1997 the Mighty Ducks made the playoffs for the first time. — photo 7 of 12

Mighty Ducks story slide 8: spring 2003, the run nobody saw coming - Giguere stopped 63 of 64 in Game 1 and the Mighty Ducks reached the Stanley Cup Final. — photo 8 of 12

Mighty Ducks story slide 9: they lost Game 7 - twelve days later they drafted Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, the teenagers who would carry everything that came next. — photo 9 of 12

Mighty Ducks story slide 10: 2005, Disney sells the team - Mighty goes away but the Ducks stay. Selanne said it best: Mighty was Disney's word, Ducks belonged to the fans. — photo 10 of 12

Mighty Ducks story slide 11: 2007 Anaheim Ducks Stanley Cup - the first ever for a California team, fourteen years after the league laughed at a duck on a jersey. — photo 11 of 12
