Marquette Pirates Hockey Tank
The Marquette Prison Pirates are one of hockey's greatest untold stories. On February 2, 1954, the Detroit Red Wings — the reigning Stanley Cup champions — played an exhibition game against a team of inmates at Marquette Branch Prison in Michigan, making it the first outdoor game ever played by an NHL team. The Prison Pirates, led by athletic director Leonard Brumm and equipped with donated gear from Michigan Tech, entered with a 4-1-1 record against outside teams. Red Wings GM Jack Adams agreed to the game after a visit to the prison during a Stroh's beer promotional tour. The result was hockey history you can't make up.
